Views about the nature of male and female sexuality are part of the gender ideologies. Attempts to control female sexuality are embedded in gender hierarchies. A male-dominated gender hierarchy is a sociocultural system in which men are dominant, reap most of the social and material rewards of society, and control the autonomoy of women.
One explanaition for gender hierarchy in some socities is the private/public dichotomy, in which men are associted with the public political and economis activities and women are identified with the home and children.
